Frequently asked questions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Going on Safari…

1. I want to go on safari but don’t know where to start. What should I do?

Start by thinking about what excites you most—do you want to see big cats, experience gorilla trekking, or explore vast desert landscapes? The next step is choosing the right country for the experience you’re after. At The Safari Companion, we help tailor safaris that match your interests, guiding you through the best destinations, seasons, and experiences to make your journey unforgettable.

2. What Different Safari Styles Are There?

Safaris come in many forms, and choosing the right style depends on how you want to experience Africa. Here are some of the main options:

  • Small Group Safaris: Ideal for those who enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded travelers. These safaris are expertly guided, with set itineraries that offer incredible wildlife encounters while keeping costs lower than a fully private safari.

  • Tailor-Made Safaris: A completely personalized experience designed around your interests, timeline, and budget. Whether you want to focus on photography, specific wildlife, or cultural experiences, everything is customized for you.

  • Journeys on Foot: A deeper, more immersive way to connect with the African bush. Led by highly trained guides, walking safaris bring you closer to the sights, sounds, and tracks of the wild, offering an entirely different perspective from game drives.

  • Fly-In Safaris: Perfect for covering vast distances quickly while enjoying breathtaking aerial views. These safaris take you straight into remote and pristine wilderness areas, maximizing your time in the best locations.

Each safari style offers a unique way to experience Africa, and at The Safari Companion, we help match you with the perfect journey to suit your adventure.

3. When is the best time to go on safari?

  • Uganda: The best months for gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing are June to September and December to February, when it's drier and animals are easier to spot.

  • Namibia: The dry season from July to October offers cooler weather and excellent game viewing at waterholes.

  • Botswana: May to October is the prime safari season, as animals gather around rivers and lagoons.

  • South Africa: May to September is ideal for wildlife, as vegetation is sparse and animals are more visible. However, regions like the Cape offer year-round appeal.

  • Note: all of the above also have great options on what’s called ‘the shoulder seasons’ - months either side of the ‘peak seasons’ and often are as good, rates can be a little lower and have more availability for camps and lodges.

4. Why is it important to travel with experienced guides?

A safari is so much more than just seeing animals - it’s about understanding the intricate details of the ecosystem, the behaviour of wildlife, and the stories of people of the land. A knowledgeable guide brings Africa to life, ensuring your safety while offering deep insights you wouldn’t get on your own. At The Safari Companion, our guides and ground operations are among the best in the industry, with years of experience leading safaris in remote and wild places.

5. Why do safaris seem so expensive?

Safaris involve remote locations, conservation efforts, and expert guiding, all of which contribute to the cost. Some of the best safaris take place in private reserves or national parks where fees support conservation and local communities. The level of service, safety, and experience provided by reputable operators is well worth the investment for a truly unforgettable journey.

6. How far in advance should I plan my safari?

If you’re traveling in peak season (June to October), it’s best to book at least 6 to 12 months in advance to secure the best lodges, camps and guides. Some exclusive camps have very limited availability, so the earlier you plan, the better your options.

7. Are safaris safe?

Yes, safaris are very safe when led by experienced guides who understand animal behavior and how to navigate the bush. Following your guide’s instructions and respecting wildlife ensures a safe and rewarding experience. At The Safari Companion, we only work with trusted, highly skilled guides who prioritize both your safety and the well-being of the wildlife.

8. What types of accommodations can I expect?

Safaris offer a wide range of accommodations, from luxury lodges with every comfort to intimate tented camps that bring you closer to nature. Whether you want an indulgent retreat or a more adventurous experience, we ensure you stay in places that enhance your connection to the wild.

9. Do I need vaccinations or medications before my trip?

It’s always best to consult your doctor well before your trip, as some destinations require vaccinations or malaria prophylaxis. Each country has different health considerations, and we can provide guidance on what’s needed for your safari.

10. How can I travel responsibly on safari?

Responsible travel means choosing lodges and operators that support conservation, treating wildlife with respect, and supporting local communities by buying handmade goods or engaging in ethical tourism initiatives. At The Safari Companion, we ensure that every safari we run contributes positively to the places and people we visit.

A safari is more than just a trip - it’s an experience that stays with you forever. If you’re ready to explore Africa in a deeper, more meaningful way, we’re here to make it happen.
